From super women to crazy families and zombies to tech startups , these shows all all resonate with our 20-something lives. Although not all of these shows are directly related to what it is like living as a 20-something, they all have a lesson to teach us in thriving and surviving in our twenties. Listen up, here are the shows you need to be watching.
1. Jessica Jones
Why we love it: One – she’s a super strong woman. Not just metaphorically. She can literally fight off any wannabe mugger that comes her way. Two – her one weakness was a man who can control minds. Let me repeat that. Control minds. That’s the only person that’s ever been able to subdue her. Even though she’s got super powers she is still a normal lady going through her own acceptance of what Mr. Mind Control made her do. She’s out to make things right. She’s out for revenge. She’s perfectly imperfect. So, don’t mess with her.
2. Silicon Valley
Why we love it: This show perfectly explains geek life and culture. Now, I know absolutely nothing about programming or algorithms, but a bunch genius of dudes (and a lady) living together is just begging for some nerd rage. This show reminds us how amazing technology is. So, don’t get mad at your phone for not locating the nearest fast food stand within 2 seconds. You are holding an entire mini computer in your hands. That’s freaking amazing. But do get mad at your roommate who used all the small spoons. Now you can’t get to the fruit side of your yogurt cup. That’s just rude.
3. Arrested Development
Why we love it: You don’t know the meaning of “my family is crazy” until you watch this show. Everything about trying to run a company while your mother, sister, brother, and father are ruining everything makes us feel way better about our own lives. It’s a dog-eat-dog world when your family has embezzled an obscene amount of money, then they just keep buying expensive clothing, water aerobics lessons, and frozen banana stands. We’ll just sit back and watch the hilarity ensue – thank you very much. However, I do wish my brother was a magician. Ahem, excuse me, illusionist.
4. The Walking Dead
Why we love it: Even though this show isn’t technically realistic, it really hits home that we are about 5 seconds from the apocalypse at all times. What kind of lengths will these people go to in order to keep the ones they love safe? Would you know what to do if you were stranded and vulnerable when disaster struck? Because I sure as heck wouldn’t. If I have to go without internet and ice cream – just kill me now.
5. True Detective
Why we love it: We should preface this by saying each season of True Detective stands alone. The characters are different and the story is different. However, with two seasons out currently the show still rocks. This show is a master at boggling your mind. Every episode has you thinking you’ve got it all figured out then the next second you don’t know anything. If you’re looking for a show that makes you question everything then this is for you. No one can be trusted and everyone has something to hide.
6. Game of Thrones
Why we love it: Well, there has been quite a lot of hype around Game of Thrones since it first came out 5 years ago, but that should tell you something. All 5 seasons have been mind-blowingly intense and heartwarming at the same time. If you think you can watch one episode without screaming, “They did NOT just do that!” then you’d be wrong. Thrones creates a completely immersive universe that mixes the realms of medieval and fantasy in such a hard hitting and yet appealing way. Face it, if you still haven’t watched this show, you need to. It has something for everyone. Nevermind the fact that you’ll be playing D&D six months from now. Just kidding…kind of.
Why we love it: Louie embodies all that makes folks socially awkward. From trying to pick up chicks to talking with co-workers. He shows what life is like as a single dad and without filters explains how hard it is to date, period. Trying to balance work, time with kids and friends, doing what you love, and maybe a little romance is not easy for anyone. He’s trying to teach his girls how to stand tall in harsh NYC all while he’s barely standing himself. It’ll make you laugh so hard you’ll cry and it’ll make you cry so hard you’ll laugh. It’s as real as it gets.
8. Master of None
Why we love it: Ever felt like the one oddball friend who doesn’t have kids and isn’t married? Dev (Aziz) perfectly paints a picture for why being single in your 20s and 30s is totally okay. There is so much still to learn about yourself and what you want out of life. The idea that any one person has it all figured out is freaking crazy. Hence the title, having any one facet of our lives fully figured out deserves an award, nevermind all of them. This show is supremely funny, but also hits hard on some serious topics like sexism, racism, and even contraception. Somehow, even in the most cringe-worthy moments, we’re totally still on board. Come on life, what else you got?
9. Orange Is The New Black
Why we love it: What would happen if you smashed all walks of life into one room together? Oh yeah, that’s what prison is. Being forced to be around people you would probably never talk to on the outside sounds like a nightmare, but that’s just the beginning. What if you committed a totally non-violent crime and like…felt really bad about it? Struggling to remain a good person amongst so much negativity and just plain insanity would start to take its toll. Not to mention your super cute (albeit unstable) ex just so happens to be locked up with you. Oh did we mention it’s actually based on Piper’s real life? Yeah, let the drama unfold.
10. Broad City
Why we love it: They might not have the most lavish lifestyle, but these women are fabulous anyway. Some ladies just know how to take it to the limit. These girls are fearless and rock everything that they’ve got. That might mean asking out your crush from high school or sticking it to that thrift store buyback program. You know, real stuff. This show makes us feel as good as finding out you had an extra $20 stashed inside that secret pocket in your purse. Tonight, drinks are on us – yassss queen!
