The Spring 2013 runways gave us a full-fledged display of futuristic fashion. Designers like Burberry Prorsum, Jonathan Saunders, and Proenza Shoulerpresented collections containing shiny, reflective pieces in a myriad of unique colors and textures. Holographic is the new metallic, but this is one trend you definitely don’t want to overdo, or you’ll end up looking like you were beamed down from another planet! Since holographic pieces are so bold, it’s important to pair them with more neutral items. Style them as you would metallics – they look great against black or white, and you can also pair them with jewel tones for a luxe look. If you’re testing out the waters with this trend, try a shimmery holographic clutch as an accent piece to your favorite dress or jeans and a tee. For a more daring dive into the trend, a pair of holographic skinny jeans or a shiny, structured shift dress will have the head-turning effect you’re looking for. Check out some of my favorite holographic pieces below, from mirrored accents to bold, futuristic statements.
Hologram Bullet Platform Pump, $155, Nasty Gal
My favorite part about these pumps is the texture – it looks like tiny shards of a broken mirror were artistically pieced together to create these beauties.
Gold Hologram Satchel, $38, Nasty Gal
Miniature, over-the-shoulder satchel bags are this season’s it-bag, so rocking a holographic version is a double fashion win! At just over 6-inches wide, this tiny luminescent bag makes the perfect holographic accessory.
Hologram Crystal Necklace, $18, Nasty Gal
On even a smaller scale than the mini-satchel, the holographic pendants on this necklace make a subtle statement when paired with an equally shiny counterpart, or with something as basic as a t-shirt.
Hologram Nail Polish, $10, Urban Outfitters
If you don’t want to necessarily wear the hologram trend, a touch of iridescence on your nails will do the trick. This shimmery, sea-foam green polish would be a great finishing touch to a pretty pastel outfit.
Deena & Ozzy Hologram Envelope Clutch, $34, Urban Outfitters
This purple envelope clutch may seem like it’s getting into Lisa Frank territory, but trust me, it will look amazing as long as you keep it far away from other purples and pinks! I would recommend pairing it with black or white for maximum contrast.
Skinny Jeans in Petrol Blue Metallic Holographic Print, $35, ASOS
Metallic skinny jeans have recently hit the scene, and the holographic version takes them to the next level. To play off of the tough, edgy vibe, top off the look with a leather moto jacket.
Midi Dress with Holographic Embellishment, $113, ASOS
Another double display of top spring trends – take the classic silhouette of a midi dress and adorn it with holographic sequins, and you get… this stunning dress!
Two Tone Cut Out Shift, $360, Topshop
As the shiniest piece of the bunch, this two-tone metallic shift dress is for those who want to embrace the trend full-force. I love the blend of copper and turquoise, and the strategically placed cut-outs add to the futuristic vibe.
